For my sermon this morning I reworked the text to reflect what I best understand it to mean...
Matthew 10:40-42
[40] You are my representatives. And because I represent my Father, you represent him too. So if someone takes time to listen to you, or commits themselves to learning from you, they are opening their lives up to God.
[41] If you welcome someone of standing in the community, their visit might boost your reputation. Most people would love to have a famous person visit their home!
But don’t overestimate the value of welcoming well thought-of people – the reward is, at most, a short-lived boost in reputation.
[42] Welcoming ordinary people and performing simple everyday acts of service will be the quality of a disciple. The reward for these kinds of efforts will far outweigh the passing flicker of prominence.

ReplyDeleteIt is so cool that we are doing the same readings here at Coronation Street in Somerset West and exactly what you are saying here in your reflection is what we talked of on sunday-going to the very least and offering them cold water - something so basic yet in the Middle east cold water would mean going to the well as the water in your jar could be warm already? We were challanged- how far will we go for the "little" folk- SNAP- we ARE connected and all part of God's kin'dom- still miss your sermons ,Barry .
