Confirmation...

On Sunday, over the course of two services, we confirm 29 young people – we accept 29 young people into Full Membership of the church. What a wonderful occasion; what a cause for celebration!

And so today we want to thank God for the grace and love these young people have experienced, that has brought them thus far in their Christian journey; and we also want to give thanks for the very many people who have been open to, and available for, God to use, to bring these young people to this point – some of them we know, and some of course, we neither know or remember – Confirmation Leaders, peers, friends, the church community in its various forms, family members … each one used by the Spirit to guide, encourage, enable.

Of course, as we confirm these young people, we are reminded that this is not the end of their spiritual journey; instead, it marks a new and special beginning. And so we also want to pray God’s continuing blessing on their lives, and ask God to continue to grow and guide them on the road of discipleship that now opens up for them.

And as we celebrate, perhaps we should also take the time to think about our own discipleship – how well are we keeping our confirmation vows? How closely are we walking with Jesus? How obedient are we, to the guidance we are given?
Let us celebrate this day as a wonderful opportunity to hear God calling each one of us, once again, to “Follow Me”.
