This is what the Service of Light and Hope means to me:
‘Be still …’ It is when we are quiet that body, mind and spirit can be healed.
Here we are able to separate ourselves from the bustle of the world outside.
Prayers are written down and placed in the prayer basket – for physical healing, healing of relationships, concerns, for forgiveness of others, but also of ourselves and gratitude for answered prayer.
Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 Verse 12 teaches ‘that there is nothing better for men than to be happy … while they live.’ Live life with joy and hope.
Very few moments are more sanctified than when praying in the light of our Lord and this is palpable as candles are lit and those attending proceed to the rail. I am assured that the rail at St John’s holds a special place in the heart of our Lord and His son Jesus. An African writer refers to the custom of placing a stone on an isivivane cairn and being unburdened. All need such a place and space. Those attending return to their places feeling much lighter.
We can then proceed to our homes assured that ‘Joy comes in the morning!’
