Christmas will be happening this time next week! We will be celebrating the birth of Jesus and as I write it is 20 to 2 in the afternoon so many of us will have just had a huge lunch, but as we asked the question in the services yesterday- just who do we celebrate on Christmas day? Why do you celebrate? Who is the focus of your celebration?
I have no doubt that we are all in need of a Messiah…..
Is Jesus the one ,who is worth following?
So we asked ourselves this question yesterday: “ What is my understanding of Jesus?”
Is He superman, alias 007 –and we call on Him when we are faced with a problem, but don’t want Him to be part of our lives…
Do we confuse Him with a Father Christmas who can magically supply all our wants…
And if we don’t get just what we want we go shopping for another messiah.
John, in his gospel tells us that the Word of God became flesh, and dwelt amongst us, full of grace and truth and we have beheld His glory.
Jesus is so different to other leaders in that He never made sure that His slice of bread was thickly buttered even when others had no bread at all- He shared, He touched, He cared, He was filled with compassion, He listened, He really saw people and recognised in each person such worth- it was not about Himself, but about others. He lived with people in the very ordinariness of their lives.
He came and lived through the very portrait of His life, grace and truth.
Sitting on a cliff watching the sea last weekend I was powerfully reminded that God’s grace is as constant and as endless as the waves that rise up and break over the rocks and seep into every crevice and fills every little pool.
Perhaps you might consider meditating on the grace of God if you find a moment to sit and watch the sea ? Could prove to be helpful…
My thoughts are that Jesus is worth so much more than what the world has done to this celebration of Christmas- what do you think?
