LIVING PENTECOST EVERY DAY…..
What do you know about Pentecost?
Do you know what we celebrate at Pentecost?
Pentecost is not a one off thing that happened to that group of disciples 2000 years ago –
Pentecost is for you and for me, right now, no matter what our circumstances,
whether we feel sad, bad, glad or mad – it is not only a day in the life of the church calendar –
OK, so last week was Pentecost, so what is next on the church calendar – no this day is of
deep significance for us all – for us as individuals, as a community, and for all churches
across the face of the earth.
Why?
Pentecost is a gift, a very precious gift to us, where God gives to us His Spirit of truth,
wisdom, and who comforts and undergirds us.
The spirit of God embraces our spirit, so our bodies carry this amazing gift wherever we go – and
we begin to see with new eyes and we begin to hear with new ears and our hearts are slowly
transformed and softened, our mouths begin to speak the language of love –that is the power we receive.
We are not empowered like batman or spiderman – that do the war thing, the gun thing and the killing thing. The power God’s spirit gives is life-giving – because we will begin to do the love thing – and we will begin to see and taste the fruit as we look around the community – we will see within each other : love, joy peace patience goodness kindness humility faithfulness and self-control. This is the fruit that grows wihin us when we give God’s Spirit space in our hearts.
Perhaps what our amazing month of May has done is that we have all become far more aware of this time of community worship on a Sunday evening. Perhaps we have not just gone thro the motions of sitting in the same pew, talking to the same people, but we have felt more alive and in tune with ourselves, with God and with the rest of the community. So perhaps the month of May was like being on a camp – there were these wow moments …. things were different and unpredictable…..
Did the month of May help you to become aware of God being with you every day? Even on that busy day?
Friends, there is good news, we can feel alive every moment of every day – How is this possible?
It’s about God’s Holy Spirit filling us, breathing life into out spirits so that we become fully alive. How easy it is to forget that this moment we are in now is a moment that God is with us.
God is with you right now …
Let’s get pratical – how can we live differently so that we are aware of this awesome truth that God is with us.
Don’t you think it could be helpful to start the day by saying thank you to God – for simple things – like my bed,the new day, the fact that I can make a cup of tea…. That is something we can all do.
Let’s begin to live Pentecost every day…..
