What is it that we can learn from David’s life, so many years later? What did David learn? How did he grow in character?
Reading through his psalms may help us get a sense of why he discovered that God is a God of grace. God’s love for us is not fickle, it does not depend on how we get things right. His love for us does not change. Look at Psalm 23 again with new eyes and let us know what you think.
Some of my thoughts about Psalm 23:-
- David realised that God was His ‘still point’ in a changing world – “The Lord is my Shepherd, I have all that I need.”
- David realised that God “leads him beside quiet waters.” We don’t have to live in a place of fear. Jesus confirms this for us in Matthew 28, when He says “All authority on earth and heaven have been give to me… and surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.”
- David realised that he was embraced by the gracious hospitality of our God – as he writes:-“You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies.” So, we are embraced by that same hospitality. God prepares a banquet for us in the presence of our enemies. All those voices that tell us “You will never get it right, now you have really messed up!” The voice that says:- “Can you really believe what God says?” How do you know that you can trust Him?”
Friends, every doubt, fear, anxiety and even your darkest sin, can be redeemed by bringing them to this table of grace. Let’s not forget to bring our gratitude, joy, hope, all of who we are. There is a place for you and me at this table – the cup is never empty. The plate is always full. It is never too late. God is gracious and ever faithful.
Could this be the truth David discovered? Our faith too, will grow when we realise the faithfulness of our God and Saviour.
