The Goal is Freedom

Luke 6:16-26

Jesus' teaching (commonly referred to as The Beatitudes) in this passage is hard to really understand. Surely God's blessing is with those whose lives are going well. And yet Jesus focusses on the one's who are broken and rejected...

I think Jesus challenges 3 cultural assumptions of his (and our) society...

3 things that our world believes, that are contrary to things in God's world:

1. More is always a good thing (always to be sought after)
2. Happiness is the goal of life
3. Popularity is always valuable

Jesus offers three cautions:
- to people who have a lot of stuff
- to people who are always avoiding pain
- to people who are popular and well thought of

I think that Jesus is interested in helping us find freedom from the "trappings" and while this teaching is hard for some to accept - Jesus offers these cautions out of love for us, and a deep desire that we experience freedom from unhelpful attatchements to things.
