......a ‘warm’ welcome to Rod and Sue....

As we have come to terms with Barry’s untimely death and the huge gap that we have felt as a community, we acknowledge that a ‘ship’ can only go so far without its captain. And so, as a community that is known for its hospitality and warmth, we are excited to welcome Rod Burton and his wife Sue into our family.

Speaking of “warm”. Has not the weather been a little bit challenging lately, with the denseness in the air, the humidity and warm winds? I believe we are in for an incredibly hot summer – I am not looking forward to it! Our scripture reading for today speaks of “the roaring and tossing of the sea” and this leads me to think about global warming.

There are some who say that all this hype about ‘global warming’ is nonsense. But I wonder what would it mean to the profits of the corporations that are supplying our energy now…..oil, gas, coal…….if they are made to clean up their industry OR if alternatives are proposed and acted upon replacing their products!

Greed is a great motivator to alter the truth.

Discussing the critical decision to choose less dependence on oil for energy conservation and the sacrifice it may entail, Wendell Berry said, “The most alarming sign of the state of our society now is that leaders have the courage to sacrifice the lives of young people in war, but have not the courage to tell us that we must be less greedy and less wasteful.”

What if God judged us by how well we have cared for our planet? Not only did He command us to love each other, but also to look after of our planet.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

Since followers of Christ claim to believe in the Creator God, shouldn’t we, more than anyone else, show the most concern about creation…..about the environment.

Our earth was once a garden of fresh air, fresh food and fresh water. Look where we are headed!

As we set sail and move into the waters of the future, with Rod at the helm, may we steer a course of enlightenment, discovery, a deeper sense of responsibility and more profound relationship with Jesus.
