..a view from the Pew!

I can hear you, but it is so hard to listen!

Isn’t the above statement so characteristic of our communication with those we come into contact? We hear so much in passing without the need to listen.

What happens when this occurs in our closest relationships? We often do not pay attention when our families, friends and colleagues attempt to relate something very important to us. We hear, but make no attempt to listen. When we do listen actively, it is not with empathy, sincerity, compassion, an open mind and love. We listen so that we can formulate a better argument or a response that suits our purposes and prejudices.

Is this statement also not very apt when we apply it to our lives as Christians? So often we say to the Lord, “I can hear You, but it is so hard to listen.” God and His son, Jesus, speak to us in voices that are very loud and clear, but it is our choice to hear and not listen. We choose not to listen, because doing His work may be too mundane and without recognition.

This week may we really listen when someone says something to us, so that when God speaks to us, we will be able to listen to what He has to say.
