Isaac Watts wrote "When I Survey the wondrous cross" around 1700 at a time in English church history when the only music that was considered acceptable in church life was chanting the psalms. He was frustrated by the lack of creativity or beauty in this form of worship. He was bored! So he began to write hymns in a common meter (four lines with recognisable tunes) and so began a revolution in church music in his time. So was born the modern english hymn as we know them today.
I wonder what revolution is happening in our time?
Who is writing the New Songs that chronicle God's activity in our lives today? A group of young pastors got together recently and formed a band called "Casting Crowns". One of their songs inspires me: "Let my life be like a love song!"
