On sunday night, we continued to listen to “voices from the outside” and we spent time listening to the voices of those we so happily call disabled – probably because they are often restricted from living freely because of the way society is run and we do not make space for the challenges they face.
It was deeply humbling to hear Michael de Coning and Kevin Bolton share their stories.
It was very clear that our attitude towards people who are challenged needs to be changed.
Michael commented that people who struggle with disabilities are often judged to be brainless, emotionless and sexless – and all of these are not true!
Kevin said that he was often treated like an object rather than a human being with feelings.
Perhaps what I realized after last night was that I so easily put a blanket over all those who struggle with disabilities and yet each one is a unique person with their own desires, needs, hopes, dreams and gifting.
And as a community that holds dearly the value “growing wholeness” let’s make a difference in the lives of all God’s children.
